DMQ2 Witnessing

Accredited witnessing for the Deer Management Qualification Level 2. Hartland provides assessment support for candidates working towards this industry-standard qualification, including simulated stalking sessions to build confidence before formal assessment.

EFAW+F First Aid

Emergency First Aid at Work plus Forestry. A one-day qualification covering the specific hazards of working in woodland and forestry environments, including chainsaw injuries, crush injuries and remote location response.

Quad-Bike Safety

Sit-astride quad-bike safety training for land managers and estate workers. Covers safe operation, load management and terrain awareness for those using ATVs as part of their day-to-day work.

What is the DMQ2 deer management qualification?
The Deer Management Qualification Level 2 (DMQ2) is the UK industry standard for deer stalkers. It assesses practical competence in the field, covering safe rifle handling, deer identification, shot placement, gralloching and carcass hygiene. Achieving DMQ2 demonstrates that a deer manager can operate safely and responsibly to the standard required by most estates, forestry organisations and game dealers.
What does a DMQ2 accredited witness do?
An accredited witness observes and assesses a candidate's practical performance during the DMQ2 assessment. They must be approved by a recognised awarding body and are responsible for confirming that the candidate has demonstrated the required competencies safely and to the required standard. Hartland provides accredited DMQ2 witnessing for candidates in the UK.
How long does it take to complete DMQ2?
The time to complete DMQ2 varies depending on the candidate's prior experience and how quickly they can accumulate the required witnessed outings. Most candidates work towards the qualification over one or more seasons, building experience in the field before arranging formal assessment with an accredited witness.
What is simulated stalking and who is it for?
Simulated stalking is a practical training exercise that allows newcomers to experience the decision-making and fieldcraft involved in deer management without live quarry. It is particularly useful for people preparing for DMQ2 or building confidence before their first witnessed outings. Sessions cover approach, shot selection and safe rifle handling in a controlled, supportive setting.
What does gralloching training cover?
Gralloching is the field dressing of a deer carcass immediately after the shot. Training covers the correct technique for opening and removing the viscera, checking for signs of disease, maintaining carcass hygiene and preparing the deer for transport to a game dealer or larder. Correct gralloching is a legal and food safety requirement for venison entering the food chain.
What is the EFAW+F first aid course?
EFAW+F stands for Emergency First Aid at Work plus Forestry. It is a one-day first aid qualification specifically designed for people working in forestry and woodland environments, covering chainsaw injuries, crush injuries, hypothermia and other hazards common in remote outdoor settings. It is widely required by forestry employers and contractors.
